Clean Energy Partnership welcomes new partner
The Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) has a new member: GP Joule, a northern German energy supplier, is now a partner of the industry initiative. The official handshake between Ove Petersen, Managing Director GP Joule, and Thomas Bystry, CEP Chairman and Project Manager Shell Global Hydrogen Operations, took place on 21 March at the New Energy Days trade show in Husum. The two met again on the final panel discussion of the H2.0 Conference.
“Hydrogen will make a major contribution to a successful energy transition – as a drive system and energy source,” says CEP Chairman Thomas Bystry, explaining the rationale behind the industry partnership. “The CEP offers a unique framework for optimally using resources and synergies in a cross-company, cross-industry collaboration. We’re delighted to have won GP Joule, an important player in the fields of renewable energy supply and sector coupling, as a new CEP partner.”
Founded in 2009 based on the belief that a 100% renewable energy supply is feasible, GP JOULE is now a provider of integrated systems for energy from solar, wind, and biomass, as well as being a partner at the supply level for heat as well as electric and hydrogen-powered mobility. “The conversion of green electricity into hydrogen is a prerequisite for the energy transition,” says Ove Petersen, CEO of GP Joule. “This is the only way to turn away from fossil and nuclear fuels. In the GP JOULE Group, we are working resolutely towards this goal. In the winter of 2018, we launched eFarm, Germany’s biggest green hydrogen mobility project to date. It provides an integrated hydrogen infrastructure from wind power-based production, to processing, through to usage in a fleet. The CEP has already achieved a great deal and demonstrated that emission-free mobility with hydrogen and fuel cells is possible. We’re very excited to be part of this project from now on.” The company’s slogan TRUST YOUR ENERGY reflects GP Joule’s vision: a reliable, future-oriented energy supply that conserves resources and secures a worthwhile future for coming generations. A pioneer in the area of sectoral cross-linkage, the medium-sized company group has a workforce of over 200 employees in Germany and North America.
The Clean Energy Partnership shares its new partner’s vision: “We want a successful energy transition,” adds Thomas Bystry. “Because we realise that mobility is an important sector in this context, we are focusing on integrated H2 mobility as envisaged in sector coupling.” In recent years, the consortium of leading technology, oil, and energy groups as well as car manufacturers has successfully demonstrated that hydrogen can be a supporting pillar of the energy transition. The first series-built models are on the road and proving that hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles can be used safely and reliably. CO2 emissions can be minimised through the sustainable production of hydrogen, which is why the CEP focuses on ‘green’ hydrogen. To support the establishment of an integrated concept of H2 mobility on the market, the partners are increasingly working on developing the technology, the product, the business, and the market.
At the H2.0 conference in Husum, solutions and ideas were discussed under the heading “Green Hydrogen Economy in the regions.” In the closing panel discussion, Ove Petersen and Thomas Bystry summed up the conference with representatives from politics, regions, and institutions and discussed the design of the necessary framework conditions for a green hydrogen economy. Between the lines, it became clear that strong partners are working on a shared vision here, fuelled by conviction.

The partners in the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) are working across multiple sectors towards the market activation of hydrogen and fuel-cell mobility as part of a sustainable energy transition. Air Liquide, Audi, BMW, Daimler, GP Joule, H2 Mobility, Honda, Hyundai, Linde, OMV, Shell, Total, Toyota, and the Westfalen Group are all involved in the project.
In Phase IV, the industrial partnership is opening up to new modes of transport, stepping up the coupling of sectors, and coming up with business models for hydrogen production using renewable energy. The CEP focuses on the road capability of powerful vehicles, fast and safe refuelling, and the systems compatibility of accompanying technologies for optimised production, storage and logistics.
